Who We Are
The Puppy Mill Project was founded in September 2009
We are a 501(c)3 not for profit organization
Our Mission: To educate the public and raise awareness about puppy mills and their direct connection to pet stores, internet sites and newspaper ads that sell dogs.
How we get our message across:
-
Educate the public through community events and schools.
We attend many community events all year long, raising awareness about puppy mills.
We also give presentations at preschools, elementary schools, high schools and colleges.
-
We support legislation that improves oversight of commercial dog breeders.
We supported The Pet Store Disclosure law that went into effect Jan 1,2011. Pet stores now must post the breeder information on or near the cage of the animal they are selling.
-
Peaceful Protests at pet stores.
We hold weekly demonstrations at pet stores all over Chicagoland. These demonstrations raise awareness and have helped to close down several pet stores! Please join us!! See our event calendar.
Our advertisements have been on the back of CTA buses, in the Red Eye and Sunday Chicago Tribune and on the big screen.
We put up a billboard on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago for 5 weeks in Dec 2011.
-
Facilitate the rescue of dogs from puppy mills.
We have helped to save over 80 breeding dogs from puppy mills in Missouri and Wisconsin. These dogs are now all living the good life!
-
Help transition pet stores into animal rescue.
We would like to congratulate Thee Fish Bowl in Evanston, Il and The Dog Patch Pet and Feed in Naperville for converting to a humane business model.
